Bjarke ingels는 덴마크 건축가로 건축회사 BIG의 설립자이다. 2006년 설립된 BIG는 현재 500명이 넘는 직원이 있는 메이저 건축회사이다. 현재 BIG는 코펜하겐을 중심으로 뉴욕, 런던 및 바르셀로나에 기반을 두고 있으며 건축디자인, 랜드스케이프, 인테리어, 제품 디자인 등 다양한 분야에서 디자인 활동을 하고 있다. 또한 BIG는 유럽, 북미, 아시아, 중동 전역의 많은 프로젝트에 참여하고 있다.

BIG의 건축물은 현대 생활이 어떻게 끊임없이 진화하고 변화하는지 분석하며 생겨난다. 특히 다문화 교류, 글로벌 경제 흐름, 통신 기술의 영향으로 새로운 방식의 건축 및 도시 조직이 필요하다. 오늘날 당면한 과제를 해결하기 위해 건축물이 미개척된 분야로 움직여야한다고 생각한다. 위험한 실용주의와 디지털 형식주의에 대한 사상들에서 벗어나게 하는것이 실용적인 유토피아 건축이다. 계획적인 연금술의 형태처럼 우리는 생활, 여가, 일, 주차, 쇼핑과 같은 전통적인 요소들을 혼합하여 건축물을 만든다. 실용주의와 유토피아간의 중복을 극복함으로써, 우리 건축가들은 다시 한 번 지구의 표면을 변화시키고, 현대의 삶에 더 적합하게 만들기 위해 자유를 찾아낼것이다. - BIG

BIG is a Copenhagen, New York, London and Barcelona based group of architects, designers, urbanists, landscape professionals, interior and product designers, researchers and inventors. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East.

BIG’s architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes. Not least due to the influence from multicultural exchange, global economical flows and communication technologies that all together require new ways of architectural and urban organization. We believe that in order to deal with today’s challenges, architecture can profitably move into a field that has been largely unexplored. A pragmatic utopian architecture that steers clear of the petrifying pragmatism of boring boxes and the naïve utopian ideas of digital formalism. Like a form of programmatic alchemy we create architecture by mixing conventional ingredients such as living, leisure, working, parking and shopping. By hitting the fertile overlap between pragmatic and utopia, we architects once again find the freedom to change the surface of our planet, to better fit contemporary life forms. -BIG
